Aparan (Aragatsotn Province)
Created: 1930 10 09
Area: 592 sq. km. Altitude: from 1800 m to 4090 m (Mount Aragats)
Located amongst the Aragats, Pambak and Kaghkoonyats mountain ranges. The
largest river is the Kassakh. The Aparan reservoir is a significant feature.
Historically, this region was in the lands of Greater Hayk (Ayrarat Province),
Neeg Region. In 1920, it was included in Yerevan province.
Places of interest: Church in Kassakh and the Teghenyats Church.
Aragats (Aragatsotn Province) 
Created: 1972 03 15
Area: 382 sq. km.
Altitude: from 2000 m to 4090 m (Mount Aragats)
Located N of Aragats and S of the Pambak Mountains. Mostly mountainous
with some highland plateaux and meadows. Temperatures in winter range
from -10 C to -12 C and from +6 C to +14 C in summer. The biggest river
is the Geghadzorn. Historically, this region was part of the lands of
Greater Hayk (Ayrarat Province), straddling Sheerak and Neeg. In 1920
it was included in Yerevan Province then, in 1924, in Leninakan Province.
Places of interest: ancient structures at Alagyaz, Urartian castle,
Hnaberd Church.
Ashtarak (Aragatsotn Province)
Created: 1930 10 09
Area: 698 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1000 m to 1300 m
Lies to the S and SE of Mount Aragats. Some forest, mountain plateaux
and meadows. The Kassakh River is important. Historically, the region
was part of the lands of Greater Hayk, (Ayrarat Province) Aragatsotn Region.
In 1920, it became part of Yerevan Province.
Places of interest: Mausolea of the Arshakoonee Kings in Dzorap
(4th c.), the churches at Agarak, Avan and Parpee (5th
c.), Ohanavank (5th to 8th c.), Saghmossavank (13th
c.), the bridge at Ashtarak (17th c.), and the tomb and church
of Messrop Mashtotss at Oshakan (5th c.), Byoorakan Observatory
and Pertj Proshyan Museum.
Taleen (Aragatsotn Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 1091 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1200 m to 3500 m
Mountainous, semi-arid areas with some alpine meadows. Temperatures in
winter range from –6 C to –12 C and in summer from +11 C to +23 C. Historically,
it was part of Greater Hayk (Ayrarat Province, Aragatzotn District). In
1920, it was included in Yerevan Province.
Places of interest: Churches of Sheneek (5th c.), Mastara
(6th c.), and Kreesstapor (7th c.).

Ararat Province 
Ararat (Ararat Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 1400 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1000 m to 2445 m (Mount Oortss)
It is located between the plains of the Arax River and the SW reaches of
the Gegham Mountains. Mostly semi-deserts and alpine meadows. Temperatures
in winter range from –4 C to -12 C and from +8 C to +26 C in summer. Important
rivers: Arax and Vedee. Historically, was part of Greater Hayk (Ayrarat
Province), Vostan Hayotss Province. In 1920 it was included in Yerevan Province.
Places of interest: the Armenian capital of Artashat (2nd
c. BC) and the Monastery of Khor Veerap (17th c.).
Artashat (Ararat Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 517 sq. km.
Altitude: from 900 m to 1500 m
Mostly semi-arid and mountainous landforms. Temperatures in winter range
from -4 C to –14 C and from +11 C to + 26 C in summer. Important rivers:
Arax and Azat. Historically, this region was in the land of Greater Hayk
(Ayrarat Province) Vostan Hayotss District. In 1920, it was placed in
Yerevan Province.
Places of interest: Ruins of the ancient capital of Dveen (4th
– 7th c.), the House of Azatavan (4th c.).
Masseess (Ararat Province)
Created: 1937 12 01
Area: 182 sq. km.
Average altitude: 850 m
Located in the plain of the Ararat Valley, watered by the Arax and Hrazdan
Rivers. Some arid areas. Temperatures in winter range from -5 C to -6
C, and in summer from +22 C to +26 C. Historically, it was part of Greater
Hayk (Ayrarat Province, Aragatsotn and Kotayk Regions). In 1920 it was
included in Yerevan Province.

Armaveer Province 
Baghramyan (Armaveer Province)
Created: 1983 05 06
Area: 453 sq. km.
Average altitude is about 1100 m
Stark, rocky landscape, mostly semi-desert and mountain landforms. Temperatures
in winter range from –4 C to –6 C and from +24 C to +26 C in summer. The
most important rivers are the Arax and the Akhooryan.
Places of interest: Church of Sheneek (5th c.) and the
town of Yervandashat (3rd c.).
Etjmeeatseen (Armaveer Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 366 sq. km.
Average altitude: 870 m
Located in the central agricultural plains of the Ararat Valley. Temperatures
in winter range from –4 C to –6 C and from +24 C to +26 C in summer. The
Arax River is the border with Turkey. Other important water resources: Kassakh
and Metsamor Rivers, and Lake Akna. Historically, it was in Greater Hayk
(Ayrarat Province, Aragatsotn District). In 1920, it was included in Yerevan
province.
Places of interest: Churches of Etjmeeatseen (4th c.),
Hreepseemeh (7th c.), Gayaneh (7th c.), and Zvartnotss
(7th c.).
Hoktemberyan (Armaveer Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 423 sq. km.
Average altitude: 850 m
Part of the plains of the Ararat Valley, bordered by the Arax River. Temperatures
in winter range from –5 C to – 6 C, and in summer from +20 C to +26 C.
Historically, it was part of Greater Hayk (Ayrarat Province). In 1920,
it was included in Yerevan Province (Etjmeeatseen Region). The town of
Hoktemberyan is presently renamed Armaveer.
Places of interest: Urartian city of Argeeshteekheeneeleen, Monument
to the Battle of Sardarapat, and Armenian Ethnography Museum.

Gegharkooneek Province 
Kamo (Gegharkooneek Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 646 m.
Altitude: from 2000 m to 3597 m (Mount Ajdahak)
Borders Lake Sevan and the Gegham Range. Mainly alpine meadows and mountain
landforms. Temperatures in winter range from –6 C to –12 C, and in summer
from +6 C to +16 C. Largest river is the Gavarraget. Historically, it was
part of Greater Hayk (Syooneek Province, Gegharkooneek District). In 1920,
it was included in Yerevan Province (Nor Bayazed Region). The town of Kamo
is presently renamed Gavarr.
Places of interest: Urartian Temple (Kamo), Churches of Bateekyan
(4th c.), Hatssarat (9th –10th c.), Hayravank
(9th –11th c.), and Eeleekavank (10th –11th
c.).
Krasnoselsk (Gegharkooneek Province)
Created: 1937 31 12
Area: 697 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1500 m to 2800 m
Located to the NE of Lake Sevan. Mountains with some alpine meadows and
pastures. Temperatures in winter range from –4 C to –10 C, and in summer
from +11 C to +16 C. Historically, it lay between the Greater Hayk and Ayrarat
regions. In 1920, it was included in Elizavetpol Province (Ghazakh Region).
The town of Krasnoselsk is presently renamed Djambarak.
Places of interest: Church of the Virgin Mary at Djambarak (13th
c.) and ancient temples.
Martoonee (Gegharkooneek Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 1185 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1900 m to 3522 m
Located SW of Lake Sevan, between the Varteneess and Gegham Ranges. Some
alpine meadows. Temperatures in winter range from -6 C to -14 C and in
summer from +6 C to +16 C. Principal rivers: Argeetsee, Tsakkar, Martoonee,
and Varteneek. Historically, it was part of Greater Hayk (Syooneek Province,
Gegharkooneek Region). In 1920, it was included in Yerevan Province, Gegharkooneek
Region.
Places of interest: Churches of Kotavank (9th c.), Shoghagavank
(5th – 9th c.), Mussroots (9th c.), and
Vanevan (10th c.).
Sevan (Gegharkooneek Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 393 sq. km.
Altitude: from about 1900 m (lakeshore) to about 2500 m
Located NW of Lake Sevan, amongst the Aregoonee, Pambak, and Gegham Ranges.
Mostly mountainous with alpine meadows. Temperatures in winter range from
-5 C to -12 C and in summer from +11 C to +16 C. Principal Rivers: Dzknaget
and Hrazdan. Historically, it was in Greater Hayk (Syooneek Province). In
1920, it was included in Yerevan Province (Nor Bayazed Region). Places of
interest: Church of Sevan (9th c.), cemetery of Ltjashen (3rd
– 2nd c. BC) and various churches from the 7th to
the 13th c.
Vardeneess (Gegharkooneek Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 1151 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1900 m to 3522 m (Mount Vardeneess)
Located SE of Lake Sevan, in the Sevan and Vardeneess Mountains. Some
alpine meadows. Temperatures in winter range from -6 C to -14 C and in
summer from +8 C to +16 C. Main rivers: Massreek, Babadjan, Pambak, Dara,
and Kartjaghbyoor. Historically, it was in Greater Hayk (Syooneek Province,
Sodk Region). In the 17th and 18th c., was included
in Yerevan's Gyoktsha Region and in 1920, was placed in Yerevan Province
(Nor Bayazed Region).
Places of interest: Church of Makenyatss (9th – 10th
c.), Azat, and Zod (13th – 17th c.).
Kotayk Province 
Abovian (Kotayk Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 810 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1200 m to 3597 m
Mountain meadows, plateaux and some volcanic cones. The Gegham mountain
range lies in the NE. The Hateess and Gootanassar extinct volcanoes are
in the northern part. Lake Akna and the rivers Hrazdan, Azat, and Getar
are important features. Temperatures in winter range from -14 C to -4
C and from +6 C to +24 C in summer. Historically, part of the Ayrarat
Province lay between the villages of Kotayk and Mazaz. In 1920, it was
included in the Province of Yerevan.
Places of interest: the Large Castle in the town of Abovian, Urartian
cuneiform inscriptions, the pagan fortress and temple of Garrnee (3rd
– 2nd centuries BC), and the Church of Geghard (12th
– 13th centuries).
Hrazdan (Kotayk Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 947 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1500 m to 3101 m
Within the Hrazdan Basin amidst the Pambak, Gegham, and Tsaghkoonyatss mountains.
Some alpine meadows and pastures. Temperatures in winter range from –8 C
to –12 C and in summer from +10 C to +20 C. Water resources: Hrazdan, Marmareek,
Meghradzor, Dalar, and Tsaghkadzor rivers. Historically, it was part of
Greater Hayk (Ayrarat Province). In 1920, it was included in Yerevan province.
Places of interest: ancient temples, Churches of Goomoosh (4th
–5th c.), Bjnee (7th c.), Makaravank (13th
c.), Ketshareess (11th –13th c.), Olympic Sports Center
at Tsaghkadzor.
Nayeree (Kotayk Province)
Created: 1972 15 03
Area: 344 sq. km.
Altitude: from 900 m to 2577 m (Mount Ara)
Located in the Yeghvard Mountains. Mostly semi-arid with some alpine meadows.
Temperatures in winter range from -4 C to -8 C, and in summer from +17 C
to +25 C. Historically, it was in Greater Hayk (Ayrarat Province, Aragatzotn
Region). In 1920, it was included in Yerevan Province. Up to that time,
it was in Etjmeeatseen Province.
Places of interest: Churches of Yeghvard (5th and 6th c.), Boojhakan
(6th – 7th c.), Aragyugh and Karashamb (5th
- 7th c.), Teghenyatss (7th - 13th c.),
Memorial to the Western Armenian (Cilicia) town of Hatjn (in Nor Hatjn).

Lorree Province

Eetjevan (Lorree Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 1336 sq. km.
Altitude: from 800 m to 3016 m (Mount Halab)
Nestled in the Googaratss, Aregoonoo, and Meeapor Mountains. Some alpine
meadows. Temperatures in winter range from –1 C to –8 C and from +12 C to
+22 C in summer. Water resources: Agstev, Bldan, Haghartseen, Geteek, Sarrnagoor
(rivers) and Lake Parz. Historically, it was part of Greater Hayk, (Googark
Province, and Kayen District. In 1920, it was included in Elizavetpol Province
(Ghazakh Region).
Places of interest: Churches of Morodzor (5th c.), Makaravank
(10th –12th c.), Haghartseen (11th – 13th
c.), Goshavank (12th –13th c.), and Gookhtakvank (12th
– 13th c.).
Googark (Lorree Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 770 sq. km.
Average altitude is 3100 m
It lies between the Pambak and Agstev Rivers. The confluence of the Pambak
and Dzoraget Rivers forms the Debed River. Mountain fields and meadows.
Temperatures in winter range from –6 C to –12 C and from +10 C to +18 C
in summer. Historically, it was part of Greater Hayk (Googark) and part
of the Province of Tasheerk. In 428, it was joined to Veerk. In 1920, it
was part of the Tiflis Region, Borchaloo Province.
Places of interest: churches dating from the 7th, 13th,
and 14th centuries.
Kalinino (Lorree Province)
Created: 1937 12 31
Area: 690 sq. km.
Average altitude: 3196 m
Consists of the larger area of the plains of Lorree, between the Javakhk
and Veerahayotss Mountains. Alpine meadows and highlands. Temperatures
in winter range from –4 C to –12 C and in summer from +8 C to +16 C. Main
rivers: Dzoraget, Tasheer, Lorreeget, and Ooroot. Historically, it was
part of Greater Hayk (Googark Province, Tasheerk District). In 1920, it
was included in Tiflis Province. The town of Kalinino is presently renamed
Tasheer.
Places of interest: Medieval Church of Metsavan.

Speetak (Lorree Province)
Created: 1937 12 31
Area: 549 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1600 m to 2992 m (Mount Oora)
Watered by the Pambak River in the Pambak, Bazoom and Sheerak Mountains.
Mostly mountainous landforms with alpine meadows. Temperatures in winter
from -5 C to -12 C, and in summer from +10 C to +16 C. Historically, it
was in Greater Hayk (Googark Province, partly in Tasheer Region). In 1801,
was included in Alexandropol Region and then was part of Hamamloo Region
of Lorree-Pambak. In 1930, became part of Gharakeeleessa Region.
Places of interest: Churches of Shenavan (6th –7th
c.), Sheerakamoot, and Ghoorssalee (7th c.)
Stepanavan (Lorree Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 637 sq. km.
Altitude: from 950 m to 2992m (Mount Oora)
Located in the Bazoom and Veerahayotss Mountains. Mostly mountainous landforms
with alpine meadows. Temperatures in winter range from -3 C to -12 C and
in summer from +9 C to +18 C. Principal river: Dzoraget. Historically, it
was part of Greater Hayk (Googark Province, Tasheer Region). In the 11th
and 12th c. was part of the Georgian Kingdom. In 1920, it was
included in Lorree Region.
Places of interest: Churches of Lor (11th c.), Gtevank,
Hobardz, Koortan (5th –7th c.), Vartabloor (6th–
7th c.), Hnevank (7th -13th c.).
Toomanyan (Lorree Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 1121 sq. km.
Altitude: from 500 m to 2545 m (Mount Lalvar)
Located in the Veerahayotss and Googaratss Ranges. Some alpine meadows.
Temperatures range in winter from –1 C to -8 C and in summer from +10
C to + 23 C. Main river: Debed. Historically, was part of Greater Hayk
(Googark Province, Tasheerk Region). In 1920, it was included in the Pambak
- Lorree Province.
Places of interest: Churches of Odzoon (6th c.), Haghpat
(10th –13th c.), Sanaheen (10th –13th
c.), and Kobayr (12th – 13th c.).

Sheerak Province 
Akhooryan (Sheerak Province)
Created: 1937 12 31 Area: 576 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1500 m to 2256 m
Central area of the Sheerak Plain. Gentle landforms. Temperatures in winter
range from -8 C to -10 C and from +12 C to +20 C in summer. The Akhooryan
River lies to the west. Was included in the Greater Hayk area (Ayrarat Region)
of Sheerak Province. In 1920, it was included in the Province of Yerevan,
which included Alexandropol (currently Gyoomree). In 1937 was part of the
Leninakan Region.
Places of interest: Urartian temple of Vahramaberd, the Churches
of Karnoot (4th – 5th c.), Grarat (7th
c.), and Marmashen (10th –13th c.), and the Meenass
Aveteessyan museum in the village of Tjatjoorr.
Amassia (Sheerak Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 608 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1500 m to 3042 m
Mostly highland terrain. Temperatures in winter range from -10 C to -14
C and +10 C to +16 C in summer. Includes the northern part of the Akhooryan
River and Lake Arpa. Historically, it was part of Greater Hayk (Ayrarat
Province). In 1920, was included in the Province of Yerevan (Alexandropol
Region). In 1924, the region was part of the Leninakan Province.
Places of interest: Temples (3rd – 2nd c. BC)
and medieval churches.
Ani (Sheerak Province)
Created: 1937 10 31
Area: 429 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1300 m to 2444 m
Occupies the SW area of the Sheerak Plain. Mostly mountain meadows. Temperatures
in winter range from -8 C to -9 C, and in summer from +16 C to +20 C. The
Akhooryan River lies to the west. Historically, the region lay in Greater
Hayk (Ayrarat Region) of Sheerak Province. In 1920, it was included in Yerevan
Province's Alexandropol Region. Places of interest: Churches of Yererook
(5th c.), the Virgin Mary (7th c.), and Sarrnaghbyoor
(5th to 7th c.).
Arteek (Sheerak Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 484 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1500 m to 4000 m
Occupies the lands NW of Mount Aragats and SW of Mount Shar. Sparse agriculture;
mainly mountain meadows and landforms. Temperatures in winter range from
-8 C to -13 C and from +9 C to +20 C in summer. Historically, this region
was in Greater Hayk (Ayrarat Province), Sheerak District. In 1920, it was
split between Yerevan Province and Alexandropol Province.
Places of interest: Church of Lernakert (4th c.), Monastery
of Harreetj (7th to 13th c.).
Ghookassyan (Sheerak Province)
Created: 1937 12 31 Area: 547 sq. km. Altitude:
from 2000 m to 3198 m
Watered by the Akhooryan and Tsheetshkhan rivers. Mountainous landforms
with alpine meadows and pastureland. Temperatures in winter range from
–10 C to –14 C, and in summer from +8 C to +14 C. Historically, it was
part of Greater Hayk (Ayrarat Province, Ashotsk Region). In 1920, it was
included in Yerevan Province, Alexandropol Region. The town of Ghookassyan
is currently named Ashotsk.
Places of interest: ancient temples.

Syooneek Province 
Ghapan (Syooneek Province) 
Created: 1930 09 09 Area: 1371 sq. km. Average altitude:
about 3900 m
Located in central Zangezoor amidst the Meghree and Zangezoor Mountains.
Some alpine meadows. Temperatures in winter range from 0 C to –14 C and
in summer from +7 C to +23 C. Important rivers: Voghgeen, Sheekahogh,
and Tsaveh. Historically, it was in Greater Hayk (Syooneek Province).
In 1920, it was included in Zangezoor Region.
Places of interest: Baghaberd (4th –11th
c.), Yereetsavank (5th –11th c.), and Vahanavank
(10th c.).
Goreess (Syooneek Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 752 sq. km.
Altitude: from 780 m to 3550 m
Is part of the plateau and mountain range of Bargooshat. Temperatures
in winter range from –2 C to –10 C and from +10 C to +22 C in summer.
The most important river is the Vorotan. Historically, it was part of
Syooneek Province. Under the Persians, it was known as Tatev Region. In
1805, the Treaty of Gooleestan included it in the Russian Empire as part
of Zangezoor Province. In 1868, it was part of the Elizavetpol Region,
of Zangezoor Province's Goreess Region.
Places of interest: Monastery of Tatev (9th –18th
c.), churches of Bgheno (11th c.), Gevorg (14th–15th
c.), the tomb of Mkheetar Sparapet, the Devil's Bridge, and Black Lake.
Meghree (Syooneek Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 664 sq. km.
Altitude: from 390 m to 3754 m
Located in southern Zangezoor. Surface is mountainous, with fields, orchards,
and alpine meadows. Temperatures in winter range from -1 C to -12 C, and
in summer from +8 C to +16 C. Largest river in the area is the Arax. Historically,
it was part of Greater Hayk (Syooneek Region, Areveek Province). In 1805,
was included in the Russian Empire and in 1828 in Artsakh (Gharabagh) Province.
In 1868, it was transferred to Elizavetpol Province (Zangezoor Region).
Places of interest: Basilica (17th –18th c.),
bridge at Leetjk, Fort Meghree.
Seessyan (Syooneek Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 1719 sq. km.
Altitude: up to 3552 m (Mount Eeshkhan)
Located in central Zangezoor Region. Mostly mountainous with some alpine
meadows. Temperatures in winter range from -3 C to -12 C and in summer from
+10 C to +18 C. Principal river: Vorotan. Historically, it was in Greater
Hayk (Syooneek Province, Tsghook Region). In 1813, the area was in Elizavetpol
Province, Zangezoor Region.
Places of interest: Churches of Tanahat (5th c.), Seessavan
(7th c.), Vorotnavank (10th –11th c.) and
Shuckee Falls.

Taoosh Province
Noyemberyan (Taoosh Province)
Created: 1937 12 31
Area: 538 sq. km
Altitude: varies from 380 m to 2001 m (Mount Sarkoot)
Landforms consist of alpine meadows and the Googarats Range. Temperatures
in winter range from -1 C to -6 C and in summer from +12 C to +23 C. Rivers:
Debed, Baghaneess, Vosskepar, Koghb. Historically, it was in Greater Hayk
(Googark Province). In 1801, it was included in Elizavetpol Province, (Ghazakh
Region).
Places of interest: Churches of Koghb (6th c), Voskepar
(6th – 7th c), Ghaleengakar (11th c.),
and Mshkavank (13th c).
Shamshadeen (Taoosh Province)
Created: 1930 09 09
Area: 824 sq. km.
Altitude: from 560 m to 2993 m (Mount Moorghooz)
Located in the Meeapor Range. Mountainous with alpine meadows. Temperatures
in winter range from -1 C to -8 C and in summer from +12 C to +22 C. Principal
rivers: Hakhoom, Taoosh, and Khndzoroot. Historically, it was in Greater
Hayk (Ooteek Province). In 1920, it was included in Elizavetpol Province,
(Ghazakh Region). Currently the town of Shamshadeen is named Beart.

Vayotss Dzor Province
Azeezbekov (Vayotss Dzor Province)
Created: 1931 15 10
Area: 1174 sq. km.
Altitude: from 1500 m to 3522 m
Includes the northern area of the Arpa River. Mostly mountain meadows and
plateaus. Temperatures in winter range from -14 C to -6 C and from +3 C
to +20 C in summer. Historically, part of the Greater Hayk area of the Region
of Syooneek. In 1920, it was included in the Province of Yerevan. Azeezbekov
is currently called Vayk.
Places of interest: Gndevank Church (936), Martyrs' Church (1280),
large mausolea.
Yeghegnadzor (Vayotss Dzor Province)
Created: 1931 10 15
Area: 1134 sq. km.
Altitude: from 920 m to 2946 m
It is located between the rivers Arpa and Yeghegeess. Secondary streams:
Maleeshka and Gladzor. Mountainous, semi-arid with some alpine meadows.
Temperatures in winter range from –3 C to –14 C and from +8 C to +26
C in summer. Historically, it was part of Greater Hayk (Syooneek Province,
Vayotss Dzor District). In 1920, It was included in Yerevan Province,
Daralagyaz Region.
Places of interest: Medieval ruins around Moz, churches of Khatsheekee
Khotakeratss (9th c.), Aratess (11th –13th
c.), Tsaghatsskar (10th –11th c.), Tanadeh (13th
c.), and the medieval Monastery/University of Gladzor.
