Brining
Armenian Students Together Around IHL at AUA
August 4 - 8, 2008
This week students from 9 different Armenian universities, the RA Military Institute
and 1 foreign university are gathering at AUA for the 2 nd annual ICRC - AUA
Law Summer Course in International Humanitarian Law. This year the course
attracted students from Yerevan , Kapan, Vanadzor, and one from as far away
as Brussels . The course format not only teaches IHL rules, but also provides
students with opportunities to practice their analytical and professional
skills by participating in role-playing exercises. As a hypothetical conflict
evolves throughout the course, students apply what they learn from IHL experts
to the facts of the conflict, and then participate in discussions or conflict
negotiations as a representative of one of the principal actors in the conflict.
The course ends with a trip to Geghard Monastery to discuss international
rules and norms for the protection of cultural monuments. The course is a
joint project by the ICRC, Yerevan and AUA Law.

May 19 - June 6, 2008
The AUA Law Department developed and implemented a conference
and follow-up course on legislative drafting for the RA Ministry
of Labor and Social Issues as part of USAID's Social Protection
Services Support Program. Participants included Ministry
personnel and members of local NGOs. Instructors introduced
various legal perspectives on the purposes and goals of regulation
and focused on the nexus between legislation and achieving
socio-economic results. Participants in the course met the
challenges of creating new legislative proposals and of re-drafting
existing RA legislation. This new program was a successful
cooperative learning experience and that will be used again
in the future in other sectors.

- Robert Fisk
On August 2 nd
a diverse crowd filled the AUA small auditorium beyond
capacity anxious to hear the very independent perspectives

about his commitment to stand trial in Turkey if his Turkish
publishers would indeed publish his book; about discovering
the skulls and bones of Armenian Genocide victims in Der
el Zor; about reporting on ethnic cleansing in Bosnia-Herzegovina;
about journalists who are satisfied to quote only from
officials and nothing more; and about the need for journalists
to give voice to the public's agenda instead of the agendas
of governments and politicians. A DVD of the presentation
will be available from the AUA Law Library towards the
end of this month. More...
