Financial Assistance

In addition to scholarship opportunities the University provides financial assistance to a limited number of students. Applicants with a demonstrated need for financial aid may apply for financial assistance from the University, which grants it on a selective basis. Financial assistance given to students depending on financial need as determined by the University.

Any student enrolled in a degree or certificate program at AUA who can demonstrate financial need, is eligible to apply for the following financial programs: Deferred Payment and Loan. Students in good academic standing are eligible to apply for the Tuition Support as well.

Applicants should pay particular attention to early deadlines in applying for financial assistance and should complete necessary forms well in advance.

MERIT SCHOLARSHIP POLICY (For second year students only in 2007)

It is the intent of AUA’ s Scholarship policy that all AUA students make some financial contribution towards their education. Thus, fees will be assessed on a sliding scale by program and cohort, as follows:

• The top 10% by cumulative GPA, as calculated (unrounded) at the end of each quarter, within a program cohort receive an 80% award.
• The second 10% by cumulative GPA, as calculated (unrounded) at the end of each quarter, within a program cohort receive a 70% award.
• The third 10% by cumulative GPA, as calculated (unrounded) at the end of each quarter, within a program cohort receive a 60% award.
• The fourth 10% by cumulative GPA, as calculated (unrounded) at the end of each quarter, within a program cohort receive a 50% award quarter.

The remaining 60% of the program cohort receive no award and pay the current fee for citizens or long-term residents of Armenia . Scholarships are awarded only to students in good standing at the University.

Merit scholarships are only given to students who are Armenian citizens or who have a special residency status in Armenia . All students, however, are included in the calculations described above.

Financial Support

The following forms of financial support are available to AUA students:

1. Tuition Assistance Program
The ultimate goal of the Tuition Assistance Program is that each Armenian student will receive tuition assistance according to his/her financial need. This will allow for academically gifted but economically disadvantaged students to have an equal opportunity to attend AUA.

Students who apply to AUA and are Armenian citizens or long-term residents holding a 10-year visa may apply for tuition assistance by filling in the application form and submitting all the required documents by the appropriate deadline on the chart below. Awards, which are grants that do not have to be repaid, can range from 10% - 90% of tuition due, depending on the financial need of each student and the availability of funds. Awards are made for one year (three quarters) provided that the recipient remains in good academic standing.

2. Student loans

AUA administers a need-based student loan program. Students of all nationalities who demonstrate financial need are eligible to apply by submitting an AUA Loan Application Form, paying a 5,000 AMD loan application fee, and paying the first installment of 35% of their tuition due.  During their studies, students begin paying their loans back at a rate of 15,000 AMD per quarter. The balance of the loan is due upon graduation according to a payment plan established at that time. The loan is interest free until 12 months after graduation; then 5% annual interest is charged. 

3. Deferred payment

Students are allowed to make payments toward their tuition each quarter in three installments.  Students must pay 35% of tuition due at registration, then the remaining amount due may be paid in two additional installments.  The deferred payment option is available to students of all nationalities.

Turpanjian Family Foundation Scholarship Program

The American University of Armenia (AUA) is pleased to announce the Turpanjian Family Foundation Scholarship Program. This need and merit based scholarship program targets orphans, those affected by the 1988 Earthquake, and those from socially vulnerable groups for undergraduate study at an accredited college or university in Armenia or for graduate study at AUA.

One of the key components of the Turpanjian Family Foundation Scholarship Program is to enable its recipients to make long-term contributions to Armenia's political, social and economic development.

Subject to certain limitations, including maintaining good academic standing, and within the availability of funds, the Turpanjian Family Foundation Scholarship program will provide a tuition award for the normal duration of the degree program (maximum 6 years for undergraduate program, 2 years for master's). A small stipend may also be awarded for those attending programs away from their home city or those otherwise demonstrating need. Additional mentoring and support will be provided to awardees.

Applicants will be evaluated based on:

* Need. While all of Armenian ancestry are eligible to apply, applicants who are orphans, from areas affected by the 1988 Earthquake, or are otherwise socially vulnerable/impoverished will be given priority.

* Area of Study. The applicant's intent major area of study should fall within Armenia's needs and strategic priorities for development.

* Objectives. The applicant's objectives should be aligned with the program's goals. All beneficiaries must demonstrate entrepreneurship and leadership skills through their academic and work achievements. Recipients must commit to developing English language competency during the course of their award

* Eligible Institution. Applicants must have been offered admission to enter or be currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program in Armenia or in a graduate degree or certificate program at the American University of Armenia.

Determining eligibility criteria and method of payment

In addition to meeting the socio-economic and cultural background criteria, the Selection

Committee will consider a candidate's future potential to make unique and meaningful contributions to Armenia.

The selection committee reserves the right to investigate/verify eligibility criteria and supporting documents submitted by the applicant. Decisions of the scholarship committee are final and may not be appealed.

Tuition payments will be made directly to the awardee's home institution. Stipends, when given, will be administered either through AUA or through the home institution.
