FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 I have a degree from a private local institution. Can I attend AUA?

We have to check with the Ministry of Education and Science of Armenia, regarding the legal status of your university.

Does a graduate of Yerevan State University of Foreign Languages or a graduate of YSU--Department of Romance-Germanic Philology have to take the English exam, since the undergraduate education was in English?

Yes. Unless your institution is an English-language institution, you have to take the CBTOEFL/ITOEFL.

For how long are the ITOEFL scores valid?

Same as the CBTOEFL: two years.

I have taken the GRE/GMAT five years ago, can I use my scores now?

No, you need to submit scores that are not more than two years old.

I have the passport of a (CIS) country besides Armenia , but I live permanently in Armenia . Do I pay tuition as a citizen of Armenia ?

Only if you provide proof of your permanent residency in Armenia : either a stamp in your passport with an address in Armenia as your permanent address, or a certificate from the Housing Office. You may also show your "Special Residency Status" Armenian passport in this regard.

Will my military service be postponed if I study at AUA?

No. The Recruitment Office will give you the official answer.

I am enrolled in my last year of undergraduate studies; I do not have a diploma and final transcript. Can I apply to AUA?

Yes. You need to submit a certificate from your undergraduate institution, stating that you are a final year student, The document should list all your final grades.

I cannot afford the tuition costs. What can I do?

First, check the financial aid possibilities offered by AUA (tuition support, fee deferral, loan, etc.). If none of these programs applies to you, come to Room 19 and/or speak to your Dean/Associate Dean for advice.

Can I transfer my AUA credits to another institution (in the States or elsewhere)?

Such arrangements must be made with the institution you wish to transfer to.

Can I transfer my credits from another institution to AUA?

As a general rule, you can transfer one course and any others as determined by the Dean/Associate Dean in your particular case, based on your undergraduate work.

Will AUA send me to study abroad when I graduate here?

No. AUA does not provide further study opportunities for its graduates.

Will AUA find me a job when I graduate?

No, but the Alumni and Career Development Center advertises job opportunities from potential employers.

Is there any way I can be waived of tuition?

No, but check the Turpanjyan Scholarship Program in Room 19.

Are there fee reductions for vulnerable social group members like physically challenged people, orphans, victims of the earthquake, etc.?

No, but check the Turpanjyan Scholarship Program in Room 19.

Is the AUA diploma recognized universally abroad?

As of 2001, AUA is in the process of accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (USA). For now, you should check with the university you want to go to after completing your studies here.

What are the advantages of the AUA diploma?

AUA has a good reputation in Armenia and many graduates work successfully in the public and private sector here.

 Does AUA provide housing for foreign citizens or for Armenian citizens from outside Yerevan ?

No, but check in Room 19 for any possible advice.

Is there strong competition for applicants?

Yes. Only about four applicants out of ten are accepted.

What’s the minimum TOEFL (or GMAT/GRE) score to be admitted to AUA?

This score is decided each year based on the individual merit of the applicant as compared to the other applicants in the same cohort. The standardized test scores alone are not the only determining factor.

Does AUA offer distance learning?

No.

Can I work and study at the same time?

Yes, but it is your responsibility to attend classes and do your assignments on time. Time management is your responsibility and your progress at AUA will depend on how well you can juggle your priorities without hurting your studies.

Do I have to pay for the GRE/GMAT?

Yes. Please ensure that your scores reach our US office by the announced deadlines.

 I have graduated from a college after two years worth of education. Can I apply to AUA?

No. You have to have a bachelor’s degree with at least three years of undergraduate education.

I don’t have the appropriate academic background, but have work experience in the field I want to apply to. Can I apply?

Please see the Dean/Associate Dean of the program you wish to apply for and discuss your situation with that person.

What is the difference between the LL.M. and MCLS degrees?

The LLM program is for lawyers with a formal background in legal studies. The MCLS, however, does not have this limitation.

Does the MPH program offer any minors or specialties?

No.

I do not hold a degree in philology or literature, but am currently teaching English. Can I apply to CTEFL?

Yes, but you have to work as an English teacher for your practicum.

Do I need to have a certain background to apply to MBA?

No. Our graduates have come from a variety of backgrounds. You must, however, satisfy the TOEFL and GMAT requirements as well as the others mentioned in our documents.

My undergraduate GPA is below 4.00. Can I apply?

Yes, but your chances will be lower than for applicants with a GPA greater than 4.00.

I want to take a short-term withdrawal, but the deadline has passed. What can I do?

You may talk to your Dean/Associate Dean. In some cases, special permission may be given, based on your specific circumstances.

I have already taken a withdrawal and come back to resume my studies, but I need to take another one. Is this allowed?

According to AUA Policy, you are allowed only one withdrawal. You may talk to your Dean/Associate Dean. In some rare cases, special permission may be given based on your specific circumstances.

Can I pay my tuition in installments?

Yes. You need to submit the appropriate form with a schedule of payments to the Registrar for approval. All installments must end before the end of the quarter.

I have been dismissed from the University. What can I do?

You can appeal the decision to the Academic Standards Committee. If the dismissal decision is sustained, you have no other recourse and will have to stop attending the University.

I was dismissed from this University a few years ago. I understand that according to the policy I cannot reapply. Is there anything that can be done to change this?

No. Once dismissed, you may not study here.

Can I change my degree objective?

You have to petition the Admissions Committee. Such requests must be based on very sound reasons.

I am an MBA student. Can I choose two majors?

Based on permission being granted by the Dean, you may have to first finish one, then come back a third year for the second one.

For good reasons, I cannot take the required course load. What do I have to do?

Speak to the Dean/Assistant Dean. If you are permitted to enroll in a lighter course load, you will also pay proportionately less.

I want to take extra course(s). What do I have to do?

Speak to the Dean/Assistant Dean. If allowed, you will have to pay full tuition for the extra courses you are taking (proportionately), even if you are not paying for the others.

Will I get an international Student ID card while studying at AUA?

You will receive an AUA ID card, only. For an international card, you will have to apply to the appropriate organizations.

As an AUA Preparatory Program or Degree Program student, will I have privileges for library and computer lab use?

Yes, you will be issued a library card free of charge. You will have an e-mail address and the right to use the computer laboratory, under certain conditions.
