AUA and US Embassy Launch Mentor Program for Women

On December 8, 2009, the U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Marie L. Yovanovitch hosted the launch of a new women's mentoring program for 45 American University of Armenia students and 45 Armenian women leaders who will provide career advice, share their experiences, and serve as role models for the promising young students. Keynote speeches were delivered by Ambassador Yovanovitch and AUA Provost and Vice President Dr. Lucig Danielian. The program is being facilitated by the US Embassy and the American University of Armenia.

In the United States , mentoring is a widely used practice where people who have achieved professional or personal success mentor the next generation of young leaders. Experience shows that one of the most valuable assets a young woman's career can have is a good mentor. This Armenia-based program will encourage young women to develop their professional interests and talents, while highlighting mentors' commitment to public service.

In her remarks, Ambassador Yovanovitch noted that "In America, in Armenia , and around the world, women's input is vital for effectively addressing the issues that confront us. We need the benefit of women's life experiences and expertise."

Dr. Danielian said in her remarks, “Women are under-represented everywhere, not just in Armenia , in top positions in both the private and public sectors. For Armenia , a very small nation with very great problems, it is especially significant because we literally are not using half of our collective brain power. I see it as not just the development of an individual's potential and happiness, although that is so important. I see it as vital to the building of this nation. We, as women, need to empower ourselves and empower each other. Our hope is that this program will help you to achieve your potential, whatever you choose it to be.”

Both congratulated the mentors and mentees for their participation and wished them success in the program.
